Rise above Rec.     Gentlemans Pistols (UK,2007)***'

Gentlemans Pistols from Leeds, after several 7-inches, released with this album their first full release : raw Hardrock with balls, with recognisable basic-classic head-to-ground-whiping Heavy Rock-riffing, with a convincing, almost direct live-act kind of power, in a recognisable form, which I like and recognise very much as a quality from the hard rock genre. Just a few tracks are a bit slower like old Led Zeppelin kind of bluesrock, showing where some hardrock forms came from. It does not matter if is new or not, fans of 70s hardrock I am sure will like their sound, because it sounds unpretentiously real ! With the hard rock qualities the group very often seems to be able to create and give rise to more energy !

(The group shared stage with acts like Witchcraft, Circulus, Firebird, Leaf Hound & Saviours).

Elektrohasch Schallplatten     Sgt.Sunshine : Black Hole (S/CU/CL,2007)**°'

The first half of the album reveals a well produced collection of ideas with the basics of stoner rock, but with interesting collage-like ideas from hardrock, with vague references but like inspired flavours to older styles, with rather progressive breaks. There are also more improvised sections, relaxed, and rather psychedelic. There even is one acoustic drugged track, hippie like. The group is based in Sweden but has members from Cuba, Chile and Sweden, while being based around the mastermind of it all, Eduardo Fernandez. The most worked out tracks makes the group distinctive from others, but thoroughly the style falls back on more linear stoner improvisation for the second half of the album.

Elektrohasch Schallplatten    The Beginning : This is....(UK,rec.1998,re.2007)*°'

This one and only album from The beginning was released 7 years after its recording, in 2005.  It is a combination of psychedelic rock, with a rather stoner and bluesy trippy-ness. It is nice to hear is how just sporadically psychedelic ideas from the previous heritage of rock sips through, like a small bass line of the inspired “Interstellar Overdrive” (Pink Floyd), or ways of psychrock improvisation, but not too much distracts from the acid trip. For me, this is all a bit too long and stretched. Two bonus live tracks have been added to the original LP.

Elektrohasch Schallplatten     Josiah :  No time (UK,2007)**°

I always liked the hard rock sound which existed since more or less 1969 (Black Sabbath,..) and which continued to maintain its attractive heavy rocking sound over the years in many groups, keeping the simple core of it, with bass/drums pushing rhythmically, in combination with slightly screaming vocals, a style combination which is effective and does not need much more. Over the last couple years I noticed that many groups really dig this heavy rock, of which some of them get releases through the Elektrohasch label. For Josiah, some tracks convince a bit more than others, but also when a few of them are based more in rock’n roll, with a heavier outcome, including the basics of the oldest more café smoked genre, and getting near the new simplified-the-hard-rock-style genre of stoner rock, the group in general is convincing enough to keep me busy listening. With references that range from rock in hard rock to hard rock close to stoner rock, the group sound balances is something, at its best, in between Motörhead and Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer, with a very stylish style that succeeds to be attractively in a rather simple way, over the line, without adding anything new inspiration, perhaps just some solos. Not much more is needed. Also because of that attractive hard rock sound, if I had more money, if I had the chance, I would still buy more of the limited hard rock reissues, and of the new hard groups of which many of them knows how to keep the attractive core of hard rock alive. This is the group’s 3rd album.

Rise Above Rec.  Witchcraft : Firewood (S,2005)***°

It is amazing how much the fundamentals of this group lie close in mood to early Black Sabbath. It is less in the bass style (unless its overclear similarities) it is especially the singer who remond me of Ozzy Osborne’s vocals. I always was a fan of fine hardrock so of course I also love Witchcraft’s sound. Besides its relatively basic rock doom, the group also uses some fine bluesy electric guitar solo’s. "Sorrow Evoker" is an equally convincing more acoustic rock track. Very enjoyable only relatively simple but very effective album, truly recommended to 70's doom-hardrock styled music fans.

Rise Above Rec.  Witchcraft : The Alchemist (S,2007)****

For most tracks on this new album, I am reminded of old Black Sabbath from the early days with Ozzy Osbourne, in a convincing way, and as a good reborn alternative to their sound. This does not mean the group exploits a style limitation, even when the great “doom” bass is often greatly present. But also the “magic” feeling is there, the group has more "rocking" guitars, sometimes melodic parts that could have been from keyboards. There are some well produced arrangements, which have “progressive hard rock” associations. On “Remembered” we hear an arranged sax solo, and the last, longer track is more arranged, in different parts, with thoughtful arrangements. A very convincing album.

Vendlus    Grayceon (US,2007)****

It’s been a while since I left aside groups with some metal-association, but once in a while some group seems to show something different. Grayceon composes their music more like chamber music, in a classical/progressive/symphonic way, with lots of swift changes, musically and rhythmically. The electric cello and metal bass -at times withApocalyptica-like- heaviness, equally quickly changes to acoustic cello with dreamy or angelic-operatic vocals or into instrumental guitar with cello led arrangements. The approach is partly symphonic-“progressive” with a classical structure, but has also songs within the structures. Different associations to some other examples and genres remain vaguely there, especially to the song elements (Amber Assylum, Changelings,..) but in general this whole approach is not too easily categorized, and for me, this is a quality that makes it interesting. After the surprise I came to listen to this album more than once, before everything unfolded well before me. There’s a great organically logic in the composed factor, which has a slightly restrained power of musical emotionality. Not just the cello that pulls this strength, the electric guitar and changing drums add their own freedoms. The last 20 minute track is slower and emotionally growing and developing, with guitars and cello. Recommended !

Electric cellist and vocalist Jackie Perez Gratz was a member before of Amber Asylum and Giant Squid, while Max Doyle on guitar/vocals and Zack Farwell on drums both came from a group called Walken.

Transubstans Rec.       Graveyard (S,2007)***

Graveyard succeeded well to make a hard rock album in the vein of Leaf Hound and Blue Cheer (with a Black Sabbath touch on “Evil Ways”), and in a somewhat comparable way to the new band Witchcraft. The album was produced by Don Ahlsterberg and was recorded on analogue tapes. This gave the right effect for the wanted retro feeling. Besides hardrock there are small rockier, bluesier and psychrock directions, which makes the album enjoyable from start to finish.

Elektrohasch Rec.     Rotor : 3 (D,2007)****

This is a great instrumental power rock trio, with heavy riffs and a progressive stoner bass, with an absolute groovy vibe, keeping it always instrumentally interesting and rewarding, without losing the power of the bass. To this, the production provides just a few psychedelic effects to the music just now and then. Also, compositionally, there’s room for clever arrangements while keeping the basics of hard rock vivid, and grounded, speeding the ideas up to many more minutes for a track as usual for the genre with additional switches and turns. Unusual also, for instance, is “Hart Am Wind” which is a short intermezzo composition with various acoustic guitars. “Umkehrschub” is played more moodily and relaxed, increasing its tension with room for some electric guitar solos, and bass turns. Most other tracks, starting from “Drehsturn” show interesting nicely evolving intelligent compositions with a hard driven edge giving the impression of one big composition in sections. The last track, “Transporter” is again in a more tempered guitar balanced way, very interesting and attractive.
Another great album from the Elektrohasch label. Recommended.

Elektrohasch Rec.      Rotor : 4 (D,2010)***'

Rotor continued their musical direction. Like a power band especially the bass leads the themes, sometimes with a more technical rhythmical complexity, then with portions of a heavy doom bass, now and then the electric guitar adds a few improvisational leads. The vocals are from grunge to heavy rock. Everything is performed fluently and with a progressive mind.

Fallout  Demian (US,1971,re.2008)***°

Before Demian, this Texan band had already a former history as Bubble Puppy. They had a hit in 1969, called "Hot Smoke & Sassafras” followed by a full album, but because of numerous conflicts with the label (Int.Artists), they finally moved to LA and were forced to change name before being able to release a new album (on Steppenwolf's label ABC-Dunhil). This new album despite all their former success didn’t had many sales so after a while they had to quit. Even when knowing the existence of Bubble Puppy’s LP, I can’t remember having heard the album, so I can only judge on what I hear on this album.

I recognise that the group has strong vocal leads and also attractive harmony vocal arrangements, and a good heavy rock drive with a bluesy bass. “Face the crowd” showed some thoughtful tempo changes. They were also capable of performing good electric guitar duets which come in not too often although they’re very good. The drumming is fitting or good enough (especially attractive on “Todd’s Tune”), it’s always mixed also as just fitting on the background, but then if you consider the potential of the band this drumming is also a rather soft part, basically rock driven, never heavy or complex. The album could have used a second additional drummer to take out some aspects and drives of some songs better. It sometimes takes time before showing their attractive heavy side: they more often keep it relaxed for a longer time before showing more. The third track also suddenly calms the energy down to this acoustic guitar led track, “Low People” elements that do not immediately show and reveal all they got, when considering how people might not have noticed the potential of this album and band, enough, at that time.

Note that in 1977 Prince and Potter teamed under the name Sirius, recruiting bassist George Rarey and drummer Mark Evans to record ‘Sirius Rising’ in 1979. The original line-up of Bubble Puppy reunited one more time in 1987, recording also one other album.

PS. Bubblepuppy’s reissue is still available (I saw copies from the labels Sunspots, Get Back & Fuel 2000).

Mod Lang  The Savage Resurrection (US,1968,re.2008)***°

In my Radioshow I described the band as expressing a Blue Cheer-alike heavy rock sound with heavy bass still in a late 60s pop-rock association, with use of a portion of harmony vocals. This is especially true for the first two songs. But there are also more psychedelic tracks, based upon on a hypnotic repeating fundament and on top improvised guitar duets. The guitars keep the attractive raw sound everywhere, and the rhythm section is intelligent, uses a few off beats that makes the tracks more attractive. Further we also have a few still rather psychedelic bluesrockers with a comparable formula used for the electric guitars.

The first two bonus tracks, sounding similar to the LP versions give an idea how the band sounded live (the recording gives a rather distorted sound). A strong reissue even when the bonus tracks are not absolutely necessary. Comes with a 10 page booklet with biographical notes and rare photographs.

ElektrohashThe Kings Of Frog Island (UK,2008)**°'

This is already their second release of this 5-piece band (with 4 extra guests) one of the bands from Mathew Bethancourt (of Josiah/Cherry Choke). They show a certain range in styles from which I first of all like very much the most doomed tracks, or just any place where they seem to provoke something of the kind -(the last and longest track is almost filmic)-. In such tracks I noticed how this band is capable of provoking a movie/horror atmosphere, in the doom rock tracks with elements like primitive vocals, or bewitched harmony vocals or screaming with naked teeth electric guitar solos, for I would almost suggest that they make such a soundtrack for their next album, with just a few extra deliberate elements to finish this idea. Only afterwards I read that the band shares a “collective passion for cult movie soundtracks, mammoth riffs and high times”. The electric guitar solos can become really psychedelic too. The tensions are not always expressed in the bass doom sphere. Elsewhere there’s more old time bluesy somewhat psychedelic rock (one of the vocalists has more clean vocals, compensated best with fuzz guitars and a hard rock second voice), and even rockier than that, like raw edged old time bluesy rock’n roll. I still like their old school hard rock aspect best, but the last moody jam I appreciate too. Let’s see if the band comes with an even more focused image for their music in future…

ElektrohashThe Kings Of Frog Island -III- (UK,2008)***'

After having heard the two first tracks with a couple of wonderful layers of doom, hard rock and fuzz guitars which within a good psychedelic jam structure with 70s associations possible (from Stooges over some elements of Black Sabbath with the post-blues-psychrockers influences) I was expecting a bit more from the band at first. Most of the time the band after that are most of the time, more than a hard psych-rocking band, much more of a slowly jamming and smoothly shaking band with use of some repetitions until they become hypnotic, psychedelic and inspiring, using a couple of acoustic elements in it too (percussion and guitars). Taken from this second viewpoint as their true core inspiration ready to expand, the whole album after a second listen gave a rather consistent listen within its variations. Technically most rewarding were of course all the guitar layers on the early tracks while the general sound, with a certain song or humming second association is inviting, like a live concert ready to have a few unexpected visions through improvisation.

Cerebus Rec.  Bolder Damn : Mourning (US,rec.1971)***°°

Most of the tracks are rather simple and raw original American acid bluesrockers (powerhouse the notes call it) with a few solos of guitar, and some Westcoast harmony vocals with a more raw nature, sometimes very fast drums parts in a steady rhythm. It is fine basic hard bluesrock with already a certain distinction. But especially with the last two tracks it suddenly goes one step further into a more original and unique approach. “Breakthrough” is an anti-war song with war sounds as intro. Subtle distortion reveals the loudness of the band. With “Dead Meat” the lead guitarist leads the theme, and then suddenly the piece is split into various parts of improvisations with some heavy drumming and doomy electric bass themes and theatrical expressions. During this song (the liner notes say they did their approach before the appearance of Alice Cooper or Black Sabbath) people with capes carried the singer off stage and brought him back in a coffin. It is unclear how much the band provoked the public with their possible future lying ahead, because before the album was going to be released some members were forced to go to Vietnam.
