World In Sound      Gunslingers : Manifesto Zero -MCD/LP- (F,2010)****'/***'

Some heavy music surprised me again with another combination of styles that perhaps hasn’t been tried before or just comes as a spontaneous crossboarded wild expression. With distorted trash-voodoo-punk-a-billy vocals and up tempo rhythms couldn’t have been another great live act and trash’n roll energy, Gunslingers approach doesn’t stop there. While the rhythmical fundaments are motherfucker dances for punks, a public for fans of Cramps mixed with Stooges, the electric guitars add mixer rambling hammering elements, with up and down chords, wah-wahs and distortions, add the psychedelic element to it with interesting musicality. Strange that guitars are mixed more to the front than bass creating a different unusual aspect than as being just for rock’n roll. “Condor Radiant Spawn” starts at most like a rock’n roller but also this becomes psychedelic being played with distortion with a tribal warhead affection to the instrument. Very good stuff ! Makes me like loud music once more, for this is crafty heaviness with a strong individual distinction of power.

PS. Gregory Raimo had a solo release on the same label before under the project name of GR and the Fullblown Expansion (review on next page).

World In Sound  The Flying Eyes (US-BT,2009)***'

The voice and singing of The Flying Eyes more often but not always has something of Jim Morrison, when heading towards more bluesrock inspirations. But the band shows much more than that, with a good live energy, and with a rather trippy stage like effect and well produced arrangements (occasionally acoustic elements and a cello arrangements were included). The music would have been a mixture of bluesrockers with an injection of acid rock jammed riffs, but then, slower moody parts of psychedelic vibrations (like contributions with organ) are adapted into it as well. I came back to the music a couple of times, never takes me too long before imagining them in a convincing stage setting.

World In Sound    The Flying Eyes : Done So Wrong (US,2011)*°

While the band showed the best side on their debute, here their strongest point aren't coming out so well. The singing gets a telephone voice effect very often, like a sort of psychedelic camouflage, the song melodies and singing sound a bit too much as “I-have-heard-this-all-before”, like a 2nd grade imitation of the music the band likes, shouting more as well. A few production effects try to solve the weaker inspirations. In this case some of the psychedelic guitar excursions seems to be inspired most, good moments are quickly over. A bit of doom here and there add something extra. The main title track with wind and slide psychedelic guitar is the most original track, but also this is finished soon. The album ends with an acoustic country-blues track.

World In Sound  Samsara Blues Experiment : Long Distance Trip (D,2009)***°/****

Samsara Blues Experiment continues to sound groovy in various ways into their jams, with the best support of the right accents of doom bass rocking, from echoing, bubbling, sliding and wah-wahing electric guitars with some great solos nested, balancing between doom hard rockish modes over moody, endless psychedelic drives sometimes. There is occasional use of acoustic guitars or spacey keyboards. The tougher parts have post-rock vocals, fitting well with their voices. As intros and outros some sitar is added too. Convincing because of its relaxed change and building up well its different elements.

The band was founded in 2007 by the lead guitarist/singer Christian Peters of Terraplane.

World In Sound  Samsara Blues Experiment : Revelation & Mystery (D,2011)***

This band has an enjoyable live energy that is a mixture of doom stoner rock, psychedelic jams, proportions or small sections with a bit of heavy bluesrock with here and there a quieter moment on guitar or sitar mixed with other elements. The vocals are just part of the music, not too outstanding but not annoying either, everything gives very much a stoned feeling. I like them most when the bass groove starts to dominate as much as a stoned carpet wherein the electric guitars with much wah-wah effect go more wildly psychedelic.

Drag City  Rangda : False Flag (US,2009)**'

This music is wrong, totally wrong. Rangda is wrong. Rangda is the Balinese equivalent of Kali, a sort of evil witch goddess. “The Wrong flag” is the title of the album. Enough of serious shit ? Richard Bishop returns to the dark side (as a new alternative where to go to after his previous starting point band Sun City Girls), with Rangda, with alternative wildness, with a drummer (Chris Corsano) whose arms are like washing machines on several degrees of heating and a second guitarist (Ben Chasney). Tsunamini’s surfing by drowning numbers. This ain’t no too specific particular mode or inspiration, but with such bits of recognisable elements it still disturbs the clarity of mind with loudness and distortion by playing more. But then, two calmer tracks are in it as well, while the ears peep after the haze, this is desicrptive. How the alternative can make you relax and take off tension, no matter if playing loud or moodily smoothly. On the last track, the two guitars improvise endlessly, reminding us how Ben Chasney came from like-minded fleeing areas with guitars, like those sometimes on Six Organs of Admittance or sporadically on Comets on Fire. Steam engines coming back to a halt.

Trail Rec.  Beyond-O-Matic : Time To Get Up (US,rec.2002-2003,pub.2010)***°

This SF based basically spacerock band had released some albums already some years ago (1997,2002,2003), on their latest unreleased recording they had expanded this with lots of extra ideas bringing them into a next dimension worth discovering, but they never managed to release this latest recording up to now. From where the group comes from, from trance-inducing jam-psych improvisation can be heard on several of these tracks, expanding its form with spontaneity. It is especially absolutely successful in the first two tracks where they go beyond all that and they add a new extra depth and inspiration with ideas to remember. The first song, “Plague of bliss” is great because of its song lead with emotional singing, echoing guitar and beautiful stretched emotionality. The second track, “Hawaiian Lady” is strong for various reasons. First success is the combination of analogue synths with electric guitar, improvising beautifully in balance. The song part starts as if improvised on a 70s disco hit into psychedelic realms, also interesting for its rhythm use. Then the track stretches with its instrumental part much further with a jazz-psych like improvisation. A really attractive voice, really. This great drumming can be heard on other tracks too. Besides, they are with two drummers, which enriches their fundamental core. The next couple of tracks were more of a tranced nature and approach with more focus on the psychedelic jam. This is fine too, but it is the song with psych accompaniment which gave them something special, something extra, which especially in the two earliest tracks gave them also a successful retro touch, strechted to its limit.

4Zero Rec.      Lunar Dunes : Galaxsea (UK,2011)***'

It is very much understandable how Lunar Dunes are on the label of the band Mushroom. The band has a taste for jam psychedelia and uses a few acoustic, slightly ethnic-sounding associations, in a way the psychedelic moods find a few new starting points for improvisation with warm breeze fantasies as different starting points for improvisation compared to the usual astral space trips. On the second track I recognise an electric saz riff which comes from a known Anatolian pop hit (Erkin Koray I think), jammed over and well mixed with their own psychedelic sound. On the 5th track we hear a Chinese (?) instrument and singing being another starting point. And of course we have the guest musicians on harp on female voice, which change the shape in comparable directions. This brings in a lighter aspect, which suits the music well. The bass with drums are psychedelic in style but paired they might be inspired by dub psychedelia a bit too, the drums are also capable of drifting it to a next psych-minded expanded level, a trip which has been taken a couple of times outside and beyond the moody parts. These moody parts also have improvisations on sax which mix well with that aspect of the band. The sounds are well produced.

Lunar Dunes is Adam Blake (Cornershop) on guitars ; Hamilton Lee (Transglobal Underground) on drums and Ian Blackaby on bass with regular guest Julia Thornton (The Metaphors) on harp, Larry Whelan on saxes and keyboards and Krupa (Transglobal Underground) on vocals and chaos pad.

Nasoni Rec.      Daturana : Crossroad Man (D,2011)**'

Daturana’s lead singing very much reminds me of Jim Morrison’s, but then in a psychedelic context and a bit darker and adapted into jam band’s approach, despite the possible desire to tease the girls as well, a bit more mentally. Despite the slow jam nature, atmospheric keyboards, the electric guitar solos keep a certain emotionality in it, the slow blues gives this a slightly melancholic cloud as well. This is the band’s second release.

Merlins Nose Rec.  Marcus Robbin : Last Hippie Standing (D,2002,re.2011)***

Of course everybody has heard of the Goa Trance parties, fewer people have experienced them although when you follow some of the blowers you quickly know where to go to. I never went although I heard talk about it, about the drugs, the flow, about the endless dance trance trip the people are exploring in search, seen from a distance as being some kind of escape in what they call a world of pleasure. Goa is also mostly associated with a kind of music form, sometimes called Goa Trance. I know some shop which claims to sell albums with this style, but I assume it is a lot more associated with psychedelics than with music because most people involved in this scene just want to consume the freedom and their experiences, a free world, so they never buy anything else but the drugs they need to exceed their experiences. The origins of Goa came of course from the place Goa in India. Everybody heard about it how especially in the late 60s, early 70s lots of hippies just went into that direction, finding a place to enjoy life in a more simple and direct way without responsibilities but just finding a place to enjoy just being, with parties now and then every so many periods. What this really means, and what became of it ever since and if this Goa thing still exists is something this documentary starts to reveal. The music of course had become something different. It was psychedelic rock in those days. And it is fast-frequenced electronic-based music these days. Peace, love and living in this bubble seems still to exist, a few small traces are followed. The locals only leave the situation because the additional tourists bring in money as well. The documentary brings us not only back and forward in time, it also brings us to an event in Berlin with one of the DJ’s who is living in GOA. And when they follow some of these old hippies (having become some kind of Saddhu’s) visit Berlin, this gives the documentary suddenly a quiet unexpected direction. It makes no difference for them how to look at the world in another place : they have their Goa trance-like vision, a form of enjoyment they carry with them.

Merlins Nose Rec.  Paths of Prakriti : Axis Mundi (N,2011)**'

With Paths of Prakriti the psychedelic music approach of the 90s is back. I must say that this my least favourite period of psychedelia. The effect is absolutely stoned, dreamy, never on this earth. Vaguely rooted in the sixties here the energy is rather low because its rhythms are slow, almost dragging. The vocals are making you stoned as well, have moments of being a pain in the ass, luckily gets nice harmony vibrations as well in a hippie fashion. We hear lots of strummed guitar foundations with additional electric guitar and some sitar here and there.

Nasoni Rec.  Electric Moon : The Doomsday Machine (D,2011)***°

Just in time before the next bunch of reviews could be checked I preferred to throw this new psychedelic space/jam/partly stoner band in. Especially on the first three tracks (the first one of nearly 20 minutes) the group shows all abilities to create a sort of psychedelic plasma, a shape that hangs in space like seagulls, a psychedelic landscape filled with stoned guitars, humming vocals, stoner bass foundations, where even the cymbals create this atmosphere. Later on the psychedelic jam repetition takes over with less surprise but still great effect. This bands knows how to define new psychedelia well. To be experienced live, I guess. The last few tracks are a bit more jammed.
