Finders Keepers      Angelo Michajlov : "Saxana" -soundtrack-
the girl on a broomstick -soundtrack- -LP/CD- (CZ,re.2010)***°

With a real love for music I think sooner or later the eye wants to be fed too. That's how the LP size was much more suitable (than the CD or the MP3) to feed that desire. With a soundtrack there's a lot more to feed the desire itself. A movie like Saxana recalls a whole past period through its music, its theme and its artwork. With rather glamorous, at times sexy or elsewhere children-TV-story-like arrangements of some brass, drums, late 60s sound effects, piano and organ and echoing electric guitars and lots of playful at times jazzy tunes this is pure entertainment. Saxana is about a red haired witch, (it reminds me a bit of an adult version of Pipi Langstrumpf) and is a comic-book inspired movie made during the communist regime in Chechoslovakia as it was known then. Comics, illustrations and comic movies and were already blooming in creativity as a fantasy expression of freedom, and this movie was coming forth from this situation. The film theme of “Saxana” is a pop-sensitive happy song. Most of the themes are instrumentals. One of the tracks is with sitar and reminds us everything is composed with an aspect of the exotic for the sake of entertainment. To complete the pleasure this release has a booklet with lots of background information, pictures and photographs.

Cuneiform Rec.     Uz Jsme Doma : Caves (CZ,2010)***

In the past I never fully understood how and why Uzjsme Doma made it to become known abroad, while so many musically more creative bands are left unnoticed. As a rock band their lyrics doesn't get through. But there are a few elements which make it. First of all, they have something of a combination of the primitive straight forwardness of punk mixed with the skilled nature of every Czech musician, the arrangements are also at times more baroque compared to what the punk genre could ever come up with. There's a happy element of fun, a melodic attraction mixed with fast rhythms, with an alternative effect to what ska could bring, with other changes that keeps the listening attention fresh. In their words (the 'Perfect Sound Forever' interview) the songwriter loves the swaggering singalongs mixed with head banging in concerts. And that is what happens, the melody more often led by trumpet. The band has toured a lot in the US and that is the second, important reason why they were picked out for re-release in the US. They have worked before with members of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Tin Hat Trio and Faun Fables. This album is their very much live core and the energy that flows along. With a few slower song parts, this works.
