NoSmoke Rec.  V.A. : Java-Java -Indonesia Screaming Fuzz, garage stomp, beat surf-
Vol.1 -LP/CD-(ID/SING/NL,60s,comp.2010)**°°

A band like The Tielemans Brothers were not only one the first of many bands from Indonesia with a residence in Holland (-for those who still don't know, Indonesia had been occupied by Holland for a long time, until the end of WW2-), they also happen to be the band with the first rock'n roll single being published on the Dutch market. Several musicians fled Indonesia and came to live in Holland under pressure of the anti-west political witchhunt at that time in Indonesia. It was in the land of their former occupiers where they now were able to develop further their career and their music. This new chapter for them would further become influenced by the local scenes, like perhaps also the English, the American and, according to the liner notes, also Hawaiian music (???) because that sold well in Holland at the time. From this new mix of influences a new genre was born and was called Indo-Rock. Because the American bands did not feel the need to come to Europe, these Indonesian bands as fine replacements, performed with the inclusion of their own ideas, the hits from these days and so became very popular. Also in Germany there had been more than 80 Indo-Rock bands who toured and also recorded. There, this scene lasted until the UK bands were prepared to be paid only 1 tenth of their demands. Some band invitations and more successes in Spain lead even to the idea of changing one of the bands name to “Los Indonesians” (while the band still remained based in Holland).

On this compilation we hear some garage-like rockers with screaming vocals, some female harmony singing, rockabilly influences and especially a lot of heavy fuzz. The singers aren't always equally successful and now and then we need to accept some badly pronounced English word. Most of this compilation surely is worth investgation. I have noticed how the track “La Ngomber” from The Swallows, one the most popular Singaporean bands, sound in fact pretty much like “You Really Got Me” but then like a heavier version to the Kinks's, with wild vocals and fast drumming accents. Well compiled!
